人類最後の日まで読み継がれる小説

あらすじを読んだとき、私は古典的なジュブナイル作品なのだろうと感じました。しかし、それは私の浅知恵から生まれた大いなる侮りでした。この作品は古典的なのではなく、われわれの中に宿る原始の魂に訴えかける作品だったのです。空へ飛び立つカフカの、なんと凛々しいことか!目の前に広がる情景の、なんと雄大なことか!解放されて見た初めての世界の美しさは克明に描写され、自由を求めてやまない人間の本能を強く揺さぶります。カフカは新天地たるココット村にて、未知の文化に触れ、友情を育み、人類がかつて起こしてしまったあやまちと今なお続く分断を知り、レースに参加します。これらはすべて人類の持つプリミティブな欲求を強く刺激し、われわれの心の中にくすぶっていた熱く燃える炎と未来への希望を思い出させてくれます。この作品の芯にあるのは普遍性です。おそらく1000年前も1000年後も変わらないであろう人類の営みそのものです。一見シンプルなこの作品が、大きな深みを醸し出しているのは、この作品が人間の根幹に刻まれた神話の具現化であり、われわれの魂はすでにそれを知っているからです。われわれとこの作品は魂の兄弟なのです。この作品が古びることは、ずっとないでしょう。人類最後の日まで読み継がれていると思います。もしそうだとしたら、これほど人類のこれまでの旅路にとってむくわれることはないでしょう。

老人ばかりが住む空に浮かぶ洞窟。住人の中でただ一人の少女カフカはジジババたちよって大切に育てられていた。ある日、交易船に紛れ込んでやってきたイヌ類の郵便配達員ハヤテと出会ったことで外の世界への憧れを抑えきれなくなったカフカは、祖父の遺した旧式の飛行機を使って大空へと飛び立ってしまう。13歳になった彼女の一夏の家出を描いた物語。どこまでも遠く澄んだ青空のような爽やかな作品だった。閉鎖された環境で鬱屈とした思いを抱えていた主人公が、偶然の出会いによって持ち前の行動力を十二分に発揮し、未知の世界へ羽ばたいていく。おじさん、こういう作品に弱いのよ。前半はただ明るいだけの物語だったのに、何故、ジジババたちが空に引きこもっているのか、かつてヒト類とそれ以外の人類との間になにがあったのかが明かされることで、これまで彼女がどれだけ愛されていたのか、ヒト類の女の子との出会いが彼らに何をもたらしたのか、見えていた世界が別の面を見せてきたのにはすっかりやられてしまった。そういうの読んじゃうとおじさんの涙腺は持たないのよ。後半は涙でべしょべしょになった。いやあ、いいもの読ませてもらった。
