神戸における華僑の世界を垣間見せてくれる
現在は経済評論家として名高い作者の、神戸を舞台にして華僑社会を描いたミステリ・デビュー作。乱歩賞受賞作でもある。 探偵役を務めるのは、本職は中華料理屋で、漢方にも詳しいという陶展文という老中国人。この他、シンガポールで成功した席という華僑、その中国での恩人李が登場し、事件に巻き込まれる。さながら神戸における華僑の世界を映し出した作品であり、作者ならではの内容と言える。陶の泰然とした大人振りと、その拳法の弟子で熱血新聞記者小島の若さの対比など性格設定は巧み。しかし、読んでいてミステリという感じは薄く、異国の地で悲哀を味わう華僑の物語という趣きである。事件の真相は物語の進行と共に自然と明らかになり、後は陶老人がどう始末を付けるかといった構成である。 名のみ高く、実態が良く分からない華僑の世界を、異国情緒溢れる神戸を舞台に垣間見せて、シミジミとした情感を与えてくれる佳品。
