1957年、岡山県津山市に生まれる。1982年、東京大学大学院人文科学研究科修士課程修了後、東京大学史料編纂所に入所、現在に至る。東アジアの中で江戸幕府成立史をとらえるグローバルな視点と、史料の博捜による政治過程の研究、政治的人間関係を把握する的確さには定評がある。主著に『寛永時代』『幕藩制の成立と近世の国制』『江戸城の宮廷政治』などがある。本書にて日本エッセイストクラブ賞を受賞。

江戸お留守居役の苦労がいきいきと伝わった
江戸時代初期の雰囲気がひしひしと伝わり、江戸で自藩の殿様が不利にならないよう苦労するお留守居役の活躍が良く分かった。

由比正雪の乱への対応は現政府も見習ってほしい
地味な内容の本であるから面白いというものではない。資料として読むと「ああそうだったのか」となる。 個人的に興味深かったのは由比正雪の乱への対応の的確さ、迅速さと絵図作成に関する諸人の動きの項目であった。

留守居役の働き
幕府は外様大名を潰そうとし、外様大名は幕府を倒そうとしている、学校でそう習ったが違うことが解った。幕府の制度を守るが、懇意の旗本からの助言を求めたり、老中との遣り取りを通じて大名家の為に動く留守居役の働きと苦労が良く理解出来た。時代劇が嘘だらけというのも解った。
