日本では事件捜査の裏方に見られがちな検屍官が八面六臂の活躍をする傑作サスペンス小説。以前にフジテレビ系列で放映されたドラマ「きらきらひかる」を思い浮かべられると小説の世界がイメージしやすいかも知れない。「羊たちの沈黙」に出てきそうな猟奇的連続殺人が起きる。被害者たちに共通しているのは、死体にレーザー光線を当てると浮かび上がる謎の煌く物質が付着していることだった。謎の物質の追跡、被害者たちのミッシング・リンクを捜し求めてドラマは展開される。我々にはなじみの薄い検屍官の舞台裏などを垣間見ることができて大変興味深い。さらにクライマックスにさしかかるにつれて、鼓動が早まり指に汗がにじんだ。追記。パソコンのデータベースのハッキング事件が並行して発生するのだが、「ウィンドウズ９５」が登場する前の話なのでアイコンが存在しない。パソコンにいちいち指示を打ち込まなくてはいけないのだ。そのためパソコン操作の件が現在読むと理解しにくい面があるのは否めないが、物語の趣向を削ぐものではないだろう。
