梶井基次郎らと刊行した雑誌、「青空」、そして保田與重郎、亀井勝一郎らと創刊した「日本浪曼派」はとくに戦前の風潮とあいまって一世を風靡した感がある。本書は文学的僚友のあいだで、地味ではあるが兄貴分の場所にいた中谷孝雄が、いまだ文学的雰囲気の濃密な時代と友人たち、彼らの死を親情あふるる抑制をもって描く。収録作品中、「桂子」は主人公の孫の早逝を悲しんで哀切きわまりない。

精神状態の悪い時は読まない方がいい。
『日本浪曼派』の生き残りで、95くらいまで生きた中谷孝雄の、68年の芸術選奨文部大臣賞受賞作に、初期短篇「春の絵巻」と、孫娘の死までを描いた「桂子」がついている。表題作は、仲間だった淀野隆三の死、次の「抱影」は外村繁の死までを描くという、四編中三編が「死」を扱った私小説である。いずれもガンで、進み具合の描写などが生々しいので、精神状態が悪い時には読めない。

臨終と青春。人生の2大時期を味わえる。
最後の日本浪漫派として90余歳の長寿を保った中谷孝雄。表題作他1編は、三好達治、淀野隆三、外村繁たち文学仲間との青春の日々と、その臨終が描かれています。 長年、仲間でもあり戦友でもある作家たちとの厳しいながらも楽しい日々。酒の上のけんかや、金の貸し借りも妙に牧歌的。古き良き文学修業の時代があったのだなと実感されます。 時が過ぎて疎遠になった友との久しぶりの再会が病床というのも、また人生というものなのでしょう。死を見つめる著者の筆致はあくまで穏やかで温かい。 巻末の「蝉の声」は全2編と打って変わって、著者青春期の恋愛を扱ったもの。戦前の清く正しい男女交際の様子が、本人たちには悩み多いものながら、とても愛らしい。最後の場面転換も微笑ましい幸福感に満ちています。
