1987年度の江戸川乱歩賞最終候補にまで残ったものの、惜しくも落選した作品。 約10年後に、埋もれていたその応募原稿が、主催の講談社より書籍化された。 舞台となるのは、文化大革命後の1980年代初頭。中国上海。 軍部が幅をきかせる中で、あくまでも愚直に捜査を遂行する主人公の刑事。 クーデター計画、密航などの謀略の合間を縫う様にして、軍高官関係者が次々に殺害される事件が発生。 複数の悪意・殺意が交錯する中、歴史の中で翻弄されるひと組の悲しきカップルの姿が胸をうつ。 あの時代の中国だからこそ成立しうる、硬派のハードボイルド。ミステリーというよりは、人間ドラマで読ませてくれる。
