評判が高いので最近原書で読みました(Kindle)。著者の造詣の深いフランス語混じりで非常に読みにくく、当時の雰囲気を追体験することだけに徹するべきかもしれません。

第２次世界大戦前夜の緊迫した雰囲気を味わえるのは確かだが
著者のアラン・ファーストは、第２次世界大戦前夜・大戦中のヨーロッパを、主にソ連・東欧の側から描いた、珍しい歴史スパイ小説で知られる作家。以前英書にトライしたが、渋すぎてものすごく読みにくく、残念ながら途中で断念した。 邦訳される事があれば再度トライしてみよう…と思っていたところ、本書の存在を知り、読んでみた次第である。パリに住み、祖国のためスパイ活動をする、ハンガリーの貴族を主人公にした作品である。ハンガリーのユダヤ人を救ったヴァレンベリ（ワレンバーグ）の話を読み、第２次世界大戦の頃のハンガリーに興味を抱いたという事情もある。 渋すぎてものすごく読みにくいのは相変わらずだった。第２次世界大戦前夜のヨーロッパの緊迫した雰囲気、特にナチズムに踏みにじられようとしている東欧の不安と焦燥が、濃密な筆致で描き出されている。だが、主人公は使い走り同然の下っ端スパイで、命じられるまま目的が不明瞭な任務に臨み、何だかよくわからないまま事態が展開し、何だかよくわからないまま決着する。このようなパターンが何度も繰り返されるので、だんだん読むのが嫌になってきた。 雰囲気が主で、ストーリーは従の小説なのかもしれない。それでも、ストーリーにもう少し面白味がないと、せっかくの雰囲気もじっくり味わおうという気が失せてしまう。
