動物園物語
1990年すばる文学賞受賞作。「キャプテン」とは象のことで、港にあるY市で、戦後天文台がなくなって跡地に動物園を作り、ゾウ舎になるはずだったものがあり、そこへキャプテンという象が来るが、市内パレード中に暴れ出して（「マスト」らしい）麻酔銃で撃たれるという話。ふしぎな話で、SFかと思ったがそうでもない。動物園運営者と市役所の間でネオ・ダーウィニズムとラマルキズムの争いがあるとか、何か新しい試みをしたものらしい。
