Work Information
Through diaries and letters left by a Tosa family, the novel traces three brothers through the turmoil of the late Edo and Meiji Restoration eras.
Beginning with a question about relatives who speak a northeastern dialect, the author enters the history of his forebears, samurai of the Tosa domain. Against events including the assassination of Yoshida Toyo, the Tenchu-gumi uprising, the Boshin War, and the Freedom and People's Rights Movement, the novel brings the Yasuoka family to life through both documentary sources and imagination.
