短歌は作られるものではなく生まれるものである。
たとえば源氏物語における「たましひ（やまとだましひ）」と「才（からざえ）」の使い分けの問題（さらに「大和魂」が明治以降どのように曲解されたかといったこと）や，オオクニヌシと光源氏に共通する（と折口信夫がみている）「稜威」という神性の問題，さらに「作られるもの」ではなく「生まれるもの」である短歌と枕詞のかかわり（近代詩や発句・俳句との対比）など。ひっかかる箇所が満載で，折に触れ何度も読み返していますが，読んで噛み砕けない自分の不勉強を恥じるばかり。たぶんすばらしく名著です。

俳句のなりたちからの造詣の深さ・広く折口学や柳田学に基づく日本人論は、お亡くなりになって四半世紀すぎても山本健吉さんをしのぐ人は出ていないと思われる。そんなわけで彼の古い著作を読みたくなってアマゾンを利用して中古本を手に入れた。 本の外形は平成７年の初版本で年数劣化による紙の黄変はあるものの、中身は非常にきれいで書店さんの管理の良さがうれしかった。 さて、内容は小生の興味の俳論としての「いのち」観というものに焦点があるのではなく、源氏物語にみられる「やまとだましい」（決して大日本帝国の称揚した大和魂ではない）という古語の由来についての考察を縦軸に、紫式部と清少納言の比較論など山本氏の興味の到る範囲を横軸に論評したものを集めたものであった。インターネット書店では購入してからでないと中身がわからないのでいたしかたない。日本文化の源流を探るために参考にはなると思われる。
