私は酔っぱらっているときにも本を読む。

酔っぱらいの読書法は？
ストーリーは何てこともないが、アイルランドであること、酔っぱらいであり、活字の虫であることが嫌みなく共存していて快い。 酔っぱらい小説ではジェイムズ ・クラムリー 『酔いどれの誇り』やヨーゼフ・ロート『聖なる酔っぱらいの伝説』（ルトガー・ハウアー主演の映画もよかった ）といった秀作もあるが、何といってもヘミングウェイの『日はまた昇る』が酒飲みのバイブルだ。あの倦怠感、あの哀しさ。陽気な酒ほど哀しい。哀しい酒ほど意外にハイだ。
