Winner of the Excellence Award at the 13th Hayakawa SF Contest and the author's debut novel. In the near future as global warming reaches catastrophic levels, a mysterious alien entity known as the Savior installs sealed domes called Cocoons across the world before disappearing. Centuries later, half the Cocoons go silent and an investigation team is dispatched. The narrative weaves together the perspectives of Elly (a technician living inside a dome), Asahi (daughter of the Crystal People, a matriarchal clan that evolved to survive extreme heat), and Yuzuri (who lost her kin and is driven to exterminate the remaining old humanity). 戦禍への怒りと生命への信頼がこめられた力作長編SF
タイトルからも伝わる、力強くSFらしいSF長編。 人類も地球も変わってしまった未来。『地球の長い午後』を連想する表紙と惹句で読み始めたが、これは復讐の物語だった。 作者が現代社会への怒りと戦争への嫌悪、人間への絶望をSF小説としてぶつけたような力作。 戦禍は人間を狂わせるだけではなく地球そのものも変質させる。それは架空ではなく現実だと知っているのに、私は目を背けてだらしなく生きている。それをつきつけられたようでもあるが、後半の展開には大きく深く息をついた。 みごとなSFならではの強烈な気付け薬だ。

カラフルな世界のファンタジー
●長径9.5Km短径3.9Km高さ800mのドーム状カプセル／コクーン（閉鎖都市）。真っ赤な植物相に 囲まれたたずむ姿は巨大な繭の様。映画「アバター」を想起する色彩豊かな自然描写が印象的です。 「結晶の民」や動植物の奇異な生態系の説明は、SFというよりファンタジー。特にダイヤモンドや単 為生殖については納得できません。魔法の世界です。また、タイトルと内容のミスマッチが気になり ます。 物語は全編を通してソフトで緩やかな展開。３つのパートが交互に繰り返され終盤一つに収束した 時、彼女たちはそれぞれ自分自身に折り合いをつけたのでしょう。切なくもホッと安堵したエンドロ ールでした。

平均気温が50℃以上の灼熱地獄となった地球。コクーンの中でしか生存できない人類と環境に適応した「結晶の民」の相剋を描いたSF作品。 人類には果たして、地球という奇跡の惑星で種を存続する価値があるのか？結末で突きつけられる問いの重さに心震えた。
