むやみと長い。
明治時代に横浜の外国人居留地で起きた男の死と、15歳年下の妻が殺人罪で起訴されて有罪になったが、死刑を免れた話を裁判記録から再現した上、英国へ調査に行く話で、日本推理作家協会賞受賞。むやみと長いのは困る。あと家系の調べ方というのがあとがきに書いてあるが、日本ではその後個人情報保護法ができて、自分の家系はともかく他人の家系は調べられなくなった。著者は大学で英文学を専攻したので、ジェイン・オースティンやブロンテ姉妹の例をあげて、英国の娘が結婚相手を探すのが難しいと書いているが、これはアッパーミドルクラスの娘の話で、階級について書いていないのが惜しい。ざっと読むのには適した本。

おもしろいが
分厚い本の三分の二は非常に苦痛に満ちて読みづらかったが、後半のイギリス取材時のくだりになると息をもつかせぬ快調なペースとなり一気に読みとおした。故人である徳岡孝夫さんに文句も言えないが、構成上もっと修正できたと思った次第です。
