聖女か悪女か…？ 人間の非業を描く四篇
表題作は、昭和42年下期の直木賞受賞作。 殺人を犯した少年を担当することになった家裁調査官の"私"は、ある少女が事件の鍵を握っていると睨む。 非行少女のレッテルを貼られたまま逝った、自分の娘の影を彼女に見た私は、逃げるようにハワイ旅行に発った彼女の後を追わずにはおれない。 果たして彼女は悪女なのか、聖女なのか。。？ 90頁ほどの短編で、慌ただしく終わってしまうが、もう少しじっくりと描いても良かったのではなかろうか。 「背後の影」は、予兆もなく姿を消した知己の女性を追う、新聞記者の奮闘。 やがて暴かれる、彼女の悲しき宿命とは、、。 「汚れた天使」の主人公も新聞記者。 "外人バー"の女に溺れた同僚の目を覚まさせるべく、奔走する。 この女も悪女なのか、はたまた。。？ 「鋳匠」は、寺の住職とその寺の鐘を造った鋳師という、ユニークな人物設定。 読み進めると、思わぬホラー調の展開に戦慄する。 人間の性を悲しく炙り出す、短編集。
