際にあった事件を虚実綯交ぜにして読ませる、歴史ハードボイルドの大作

飛行機の英雄の子供が誘拐され・・・というお話。この事件は実在して、捕まった犯人は実は冤罪で・・・という事実は有名なので、読まないでも筋を予測できそうで、読む気にならない方もいらっしゃるとは思いますが、小説の構成、個性的な登場人物、読みやすい文章で７００ページくらいある長い作品ですが、一気に読めます。ほとんどの事象やキャラクターは実在するそうですが、著者のコリンズ氏の想像力で補っている部分もあるとは思いますが、過去の体験していない事象を扱う場合、ある種の虚実綯交ぜになるのはしかたないので、細部に欠陥があったとしても、あまり目くじら立てずに素直に読んだ方がいいかも。著者のコリンズ氏は結構実力がある方ですが、翻訳は映画のノベライズが多い感じで、このシリーズも私の知る限り、３作しか翻訳されておらず、残念です。実際にあった事件を虚実綯交ぜにして読ませる、歴史ハードボイルドの大作。是非ご一読を。
なぜ、評判にならなかったのだろうか

実際にあった事件を扱いながら、いわゆるノンフィクション・ノベルの体裁はとっていない。むしろ、通俗ハードボイルド小説の路線で書き切っている。それでいて決して卑俗に陥っていないのがすごい。枝道、寄り道が複雑なので「大丈夫かなあ」と後半で不安を感じないでもなかったが、いや、恐れ入りました。ラストも実におみごと。
