• いい本です。

  子供向けの本ですが丁寧に作っている のがわかりました。絵も細か過ぎる位 細かくて、さすがプロはすごいと思いました。ある意味リアルですが、ほんわかした 絵なんで、じっくり見ています。 子供に優しく、糸を作っていることが そう思いました。大人向けの本、特に雑誌 なんかは大きいクリップ？がしとした 金属の留め具ですからね。

• 一つの本として町を読む

  『せいめいのれきし』とか、『ちいさいおうち』とか、バートンの絵本が大好きだった。ページをめくるごとに、同じ場所の時代が変わっていく。『ふるさと60年』は10年単位だが、これはなんと１２０００年！ 同じ場所に原始人から現代人まで、まったく異なる生活形態を繰り広げていく。 ウォーリーなんかより、はるかに奥が深いぞ。たしかに、中心となるのは、タイムトラベラーの兄ちゃんを探せ、というゲーム。ゴーグルを頭に載せて、かならずどこかに隠れている。それだけじゃない。ページの周辺に、その時代の特徴を記したものがあって、それを見付ける。いやいや、それだけじゃない。昔、海賊が落とした宝箱が後のページで川から引き上げあられたり、ローマ人の使っていた鎧が、現代の博物館に飾られていたり。出てくる人物、ひとりひとりにドラマがあって、ああ、町ってこういうことだよな、というのが、見てわかる。とにかく遊びが細かい、細かい。いくら見ていても、見つくせられないくらい、細かい。 どのページから見てもいい。だけど、ページを越えて、建物ができ、廃墟になり、そしてそこにまた別の建物ができていく。人は生まれて死んで、町は変わって、でも、続いていく。一時代だけのページでは完結しない、一つの本としての町。いろいろ示唆に富んでいて、いつまでも見飽きることがない。

• 人類のいとなみが感じられる

  面白い観点からの本でした。同一の場所を時代の流れで体験できるトラベル。場所が日本でも見てみたい気がしました。絵柄は好みが分かれるかもしれません。私はどちらかというとあまり好みではありませんでしたが、内容に魅かれて購入しました。

• 定点観測

  何気なく図書館で手に取ったらはまってしまい手元に置きたくなったので購入しました。 昔世界史の勉強で習ったけど全然イメージが掴めなかったローマ帝国、ゲルマン民族の大移動などの断片的な知識が、町の定点観測という方法でようやく 「あーこういうことか…」と理解出来たような気がします。 同じ建物でも時代によって真新しかったり古びていたり芸が細かいですね。 この「ある町」はかつて旅行したフランクフルトを思い出しました。

• 子どもも大人も

  世界史の勉強本ですが、絵が中心なので、大人と一緒になら幼稚園生くらいの子から楽しめそうな内容。(理解できるかは別にして) 見開きにごちゃごちゃといろいろな内容が描かれています。 ウォーリーを探せ的なゲーム要素もあります。 このシリーズ、小中学校の図書館にあったら人気出るだろうな(笑) イラストの欄外に解説もあるので、大人が軽い気持ちで歴史の復習をするのにも役立ちそう。

• 繰り返し眺めていたい本

  図書館で児童向けの場所においてありました。 ヨーロッパのとある地域を原始時代から現代まで 歴史の移り変わりとともに生活様式の変わっていく様を精密な絵とともに表現しています。 個人的にこういう本には弱いです。 歴史。ジオラマのような細かくリアルな描写。宝探し。絵の中が動きそうな絵本です。 絵本には残酷な場面もあります。

• 緻密な絵と定点観測という発想がグー！

  永きに渡る人間たちの営み、町の変遷を、「定点観測」して、 妹尾河童氏を髣髴させる細密画で見せるという企画力に脱帽！ ただそれぞれの時代のもう少し細かい説明が加わればさらによかったと 思うのは私だけでしょうか。しかし大人の繰り返しの読書(?)にも耐える優れた本だと思います。 （「ウォリーを探せ」みたいなおまけも遊び心があっていいですね・笑）

• ちょっとしたウオーリーを探せ

  大型の絵本のなかいっぱいに、その時代の街の人々の生活が生き生きと描かれており、細かな一枚絵をじっくり見るのが好きな人には楽しめます。また、おなじ場所の移り変わりということで立派な建物が、次の時代には朽ちていったりととてもドラマチックに展開していきます。 端にはいろいろと「この人を探せ！」みたいな設問が用意されており、ウオーリーをさがせみたいなゲーム性も用意されています。どの時代にも主人公のタイムトラベラーがいるのですが、なかなか探すのは大変ですよ！？ 説明がないんですけど中世初期のお城の城郭にぶら下がってるのは、どう見ても吊るし牢の刑を受けてる人ですよね？原本は説明があるんでしょうか？

• the kind of book that brings history to life

  This is not a history text; it will not give you factoids or dates. But it will enliven your appreciation of the passage of time and the continuity of human existence. This is a large but lightweight book. Each page is approximately 13 by 10 inches, and each of the fourteen depictions are shown in a two-page spread of about 26 inches by 10. The site depicted is an area near a waterway, presumably in the English midlands, and the eras shown are 10,000 BCE, showing a winter settlement of Stone Age hunters; 2000 BCE, an early farming settlement; 600 BCE, the Iron Age; AD 100, during Roman occupation; 600, after the collapse of Roman civilization to barbarian invaders; 900, after the Viking raids; 1200s, a medieval village; 1400s, a medieval town; 1500s, during the Bubonic Plague; 1600s, during a time of religious wars; 1700s, the Regency period; early 1800s, the beginning of industrialization; late 1800s, a thriving city; and finally, a modern city. In successive time periods we see objects and buildings from the last era in ruins or having been adapted for other uses. We see that some things never change (boating or imbibing, for example) while others change markedly (technology, cleanliness, etc.), and that to "progress" is not always to move forward. A fun book with lively cross-section watercolor drawings that will bring the concept of history to life, this book will lose some relevance for North American readers (who might also enjoy Gail Gibbons' FROM PATH TO HIGHWAY about the Boston Post Road through history), but it is still eminently worthwhile and enjoyable.

• Great series of cross section books

  I have always been a big fan of cross section books and A Street Through Time doesn't disappoint. This is the third book in this series I purchased and I love them all and have read/viewed several times. The storyline is ok but the artistry has great visuals.

• A great way to learn history

  I saw this in a shop and thought it might be cheaper on Amazon. It was a bargain here and postage included I saved over £10 on this present for my grandchildren aged 6 and 10. I thought it a good way to teach real history, combining a knowledge of dates/periods with social history too. it is an excellent approach. My 10 year old grandaughter read it herself with enjoyment. I read to my six year old grandson. We did this over several days so we could really study each page and benefit from them. He enjoyed answering the questions, finding objects and activities. Changes through the centuries are well evidenced. The castle goes from a vital defence through a war ruin to present day tourist attraction as an ancient monument. A most excellent way of making history informed and enjoyable for all ages.

• A great book you'll enjoy almost as much as your kids

  My children greatly enjoy all the books in this series, and while Anne Millard does a great job with the facts it is the art of Steve Noon that really makes these books phenomenal. Easily understood information that is very interesting appears on each page, and with characters you can follow throughout the book you can spend a long time searching for them -- which allows you to really appreciate all the other historically accurate mini-scenes that play out all over. I will admit that I have been known to look through these books even when my children aren't around. This book, and all the others in this series, should be enjoyable for all children of all ages. Even those who aren't old enough to read will still love the pictures and learn something. Older children learn quite a bit, and keep coming back to the book because there is always something new to find. I highly recommend this book, and encourage any parent to add all of them to their collection!
