本書は、中国出身の国際的芸術家、蔡國強の大規模個展「蔡國強 宇宙遊——〈原初火球〉から始まる」展（2023年6月29日〜8月21日、国立新美術館）の図録である。東洋哲学、社会問題を作品の基本コンセプトとし、火薬絵画、インスタレーションや屋外爆破プロジェクトなどで評価されてきた蔡は、1986年末から約9年間、美術家としての成長に重要な時期を日本で過ごし、1995年からはニューヨークに拠点を移して活動してきた。本書では、宇宙や見えない世界などをテーマに、作家の原点となった展覧会〈原初火球〉を宇宙の誕生になぞらえた起点とし、作家自身の活動の旅をたどる。貴重な初期作品から代表作《大脚印》《スカイラダー》、そして近年の作品に至るまでを紹介するとともに、プロジェクトのスケッチ、火薬のドローイングや絵画作品など、作家エッセイも含む豊富な資料を掲載する。日英バイリンガル。 This book is for internationally renowned contemporary artist Cai Guo-Qiang's large-scale solo exhibition, Ramble in the Cosmos―From Primeval Fireball Onward. This exhibition catalogue will feature approximately fifty works from the collections of major public art museums in Japan as well as from the artist's own collection, including new works exploded on glass and mirror making their debut in Japan. This book will be enriched by a large selection of rare archival materials as well as essays and texts written from the artist's first-person perspective.
蔡國強(サイコッキョウ)：1957年に中国の福建省・泉州市で生まれた蔡は、上海戯劇学院で舞台芸術を学んだ後、1986年12月から1995年9月まで日本で活動。日本では筑波大学に在籍し、その後、東京、取手、いわきなどで生活、制作するなかで、火薬の爆発による独自の絵画を開拓して一躍注目を集めた。1989年の多摩川での最初の屋外爆発プロジェクト以来、数十年にわたって世界中で一連の爆発プロジェクトを実現してきた。 1995年にニューヨークに拠点を移して以降ますます創作活動の幅を広げた蔡は、さまざまな国や地域で重要な個展を開催し、国際的にもっとも影響力の大きい芸術家の一人として活躍してきた。2005年には、ヴェネチア・ビエンナーレ初の中国パヴィリオンのキュレーターを務め、2008年の北京オリンピックと2022年北京冬季オリンピックでは、開閉会式視覚特効芸術と花火監督を務め、世界中の人々を魅了した。爆発プロジェクト《スカイラダー》は2015年に蔡の故郷の泉州で実現し、同名のドキュメンタリー映画がNetflixで全世界に配信された。 Cai Guo-Qiang, known for his gunpowder drawings, is one of the most influential artists in the world, having held major solo exhibitions across the globe. Cai was the curator of the first Chinese Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2005, and served as the Director of Visual and Special Effects and Fireworks for both the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics and the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. His documentary titled Sky Ladder was distributed worldwide by Netflix in 2016.
