著者が編集した「明治探偵冒険小説集」（ちくま文庫2005）を手にした方には必読かもしれません。「探偵小説なんて古い言い回し。今は推理小説かミステリーだろう」とのお考えなら改めた方がいいでしょう。「探偵小説」が探偵の犯人捜し小説に尽きず、絢爛たるロマンを包含していたことは江戸川乱歩前後の作家を見ればわかります。では、その源流は？という興味にミステリーファンならまずこだわるはず。その答えが本書にあります。いわばミステリー版「日本文壇史」あるいは「日本ＳＦこてん古典」（横田順彌）。本書を読めば少なくとも黒岩涙香を読みたくなるでしょう。今日では「黒岩涙香探偵小説傑作選」（論創社）などもあるので好都合。本書だけでも黒岩涙香から横溝正史までの流れがつかめます。乱歩も正史もあそこまで涙香に心酔していたとは。本書で大きな流れを理解し、さらにその詳細を知りたい読者には、同著者の「大正の探偵小説」「昭和の探偵小説」「近代の探偵小説」がおすすめです。
