軍馬の末路は？
「蛍の河」 満州事変、日中戦争、アジア・太平洋戦争で使役された馬の数（馬匹）は、軍馬と現地徴用馬をあわせ百数十万頭（うち軍馬は七〇万頭）とされる。しかし、これらの消息を記した戦史・戦記は皆無である。 百数十万頭もの馬をどのように徴発し、どのように輸送し、飼養は、使役は、またその末路は。兵隊と同じように、戦闘死、病死、あるいは食用にでもしてしまったか、全き分からない。その貴重な体験の一端を記したのが伊藤圭一氏の本誌である。 戦争中（多分支那事変）を背景に、馬をあつかっている兵隊の馬に対する愛情を美しく、こまやかにえがいたものである。水上勉著「兵卒の鬣」、「馬よ花野に眠るべし」とあわせ、馬好きでなくとも、ぜひ読んでいただきたい一冊である。
