Issen Gorin-tachi no Yokocho is Takaya Kodama’s reportage tracing the memories of people who lived in Tokyo’s working-class neighborhoods during wartime. Using Kineo Kuwabara’s photographs as a clue, it depicts the weight of war brought by draft notices from the place of everyday life.

First published by Shobunsha and later reissued by Iwanami and Chikuma, this is a major work of reportage. Starting from wartime photographs, it recovers the memories of young men sent to war and the families left behind. On the eve of thirty years after the war, it records traces of war as lived history.
