先ごろ長逝した松原一枝の出世作、田村俊子賞受賞作である。戦前の福岡で、同人誌『こをろ』を作り、島尾敏雄、阿川弘之、真鍋呉夫らと文学的交わりをした詩人・矢山哲治が、太平洋戦時中、鉄道事故で25歳で死ぬまでを描いたものである。ところどころに挿入される矢山の詩がいい。詩の分からない私がいいと思うのだからすごいものだ。松原の筆致がまたいい。たどたどしく、飛ばし読みが出来ない。だが、読みやめることが出来ない。初心の良さであろう。周囲の女性たちに、奇妙な恋心を抱くことの多かった矢山だが、それはまたこの時代の青年の一典型でもあったか。矢山哲治という、知らなかった詩人が身近に思えてくる、不思議な書である。こういう名著が埋もれているのが、現代というものだ。
