Shanghai Bansking is a play by Ren Saito. Set in Shanghai from the early Showa period into wartime, it depicts Japanese jazz musicians drawn to music, youth, love, and freedom while the darker shadows of the age gather around them.

First staged by Jiyu Gekijo in 1979 and awarded the Kishida Kunio Drama Award in 1980, Shanghai Bansking is one of Ren Saito's major works. It follows jazz musicians and dancers in the international city of Shanghai in the late 1930s, presenting their freewheeling lives while revealing how Japan's war crushes that freedom. The play combines the drive of musical theater with the sadness of people swept up by history, and it was later adapted for film.

戦後日本を代表する戯曲のひとつ
本作は1980年度第24回岸田國士戯曲賞を受賞した戯曲である。この作品によりオンシアター自由劇場とマドンナ役吉田日出子はスターダムにのしあがった。（また舞台作品として1979年、第14回紀伊国屋演劇賞・団体賞も受賞している） この舞台作品では役者が実際に劇中音楽を演奏し、唄い、踊ることが一つの目玉であった。その観点から語られることが多い作品だが、そういうケレンを外しても尚、優れた戯曲であったことが何回も再演され、全国で上演されるに到った真相であろう。 上海・ジャズというエキゾチックな舞台背景に隠されながらもこの戯曲のテーマは静かな反戦歌を奏でるところにある。声高に反戦を訴えないところにポイントがあるのだ。
