The brilliant new novel in the New York Times bestselling series by Louise Penny, one of the most acclaimed crime writers of our time No outsiders are ever admitted to the monastery of Saint-Gilbert-Entre-les-Loups, hidden deep in the wilderness of Quebec, where two dozen cloistered monks live in peace and prayer. They grow vegetables, they tend chickens, they make chocolate. And they sing. Ironically, for a community that has taken a vow of silence, the monks have become world-famous for their glorious voices, raised in ancient chants whose effect on both singer and listener is so profound it is known as "the beautiful mystery." But when the renowned choir director is murdered, the lock on the monastery's massive wooden door is drawn back to admit Chief Inspector Armand Gamache and Jean-Guy Beauvoir of the Sûreté du Québec. There they discover disquiet beneath the silence, discord in the apparent harmony. One of the brothers, in this life of prayer and contemplation, has been contemplating murder. As the peace of the monastery crumbles, Gamache is forced to confront some of his own demons, as well as those roaming the remote corridors. Before finding the killer, before restoring peace, the Chief must first consider the divine, the human, and the cracks in between. The Beautiful Mystery is the winner of the 2012 Agatha Award for best novel, the 2013 Anthony Award for best novel and the 2013 Macavity Award for best novel.

  • A spiritual crime novel

This latest Armand-Gamache-novel is a high point - again - of Louise Penny's craft. I wouldn't advise it for readers who want action and exciting situations and so forth. Though it i s a crime novel it has so may more rewarding features, spiritual features, psychological, historical, musical features and while reading it I got so much lost in the world of plainchant as I've never been when listening to it. Bu now I will listen to it with different ears. Heartbreaking, too, Jean-Guy's demons, intertwined with Gamache's demons - well oh, just read it for yourself!! Do!!!!

  • just perfect

I was late to this author but in a way I am glad because I still have so many books in this series now to read . This was such a lovely read , I am now so invested in the lives of Inspector Gamache , Jean Guy et al , that I am going straight into the next in the series !

  • Bellissimo

  • Holy is as holy does, until the heavenly chanting is stopped.

First of all, it must be said that one should read the Chief Inspector Gamache series in the order written, since a storyline flows through all the novels, linking plots and characters together, into a long, thoughtful tale of light and dark; love and hate; crime and punishment; and good and evil. But, once again in this book, Louise Penny delivers a very well-written mystery that takes a definite detour from her usual cast of quirky and earnest characters that habituate Three Pines, that hidden but deadly village, deep in the Quebec wilderness. However, in this crime-riddled tale, Gamache and Beauvoir are sent to a monastery, deep in the forest, a fortress of solitude and musical beauty, in the form of recently famous, Gregorian chants, the life ocus of the friars and their leaders. One of the holy men is found dead, in the abbot's garden. Up to the day of the killing, all has gone well, behind the thick walls of the sanctuary that houses and protects 25 monks, until one of them is murdered. Within hours, the Quebec Surete is summoned to catch the holy killer. Hence, Armand Gamache and Jean-Guy Beauvoir disembark at the dock of the monastery. From the first moments behind the thick, high walls, both men are in new territory. They brothers and their abbot are not the usual ilk that appear to resort to murder. But one of them is guilty. As the police investigation process unfolds, both the chief inspector and his second in command are caught up in a labyrinth of Gregorian chants, corridors, a chapel, cloisters and cells that confuse and distract their progress. In the midst of the investigation, the head of the Surete, arrives to further salt the physical and psychological wounds that both inspectors suffered, in a previous novel, when Gamache and his team enter into a trap and several officers are killed or wounded. This distraction to the solving of the death of the dead friar puts both Gamache and Beauvoir at odds with one another and the entire Surete, not to mention their focus on the finding the monk's killer. Then enters a visitor, fresh from the Vatican. His arrival further complicates the investigation. In the end and with the help of the Holy See's representative, a unique perspective on the cloistered brothers and their wilderness fortress is revealed and the murderer is exposed. Gamache, in his usual thoughtful but focused style, then hurries off to tend to further pressures on his private and professional life. As always, Ms. Penny gives her readers a wee hint into what the next crime scene might be, a least a clue that all is not all well with the Surete. Besides revisiting the wonderful characters and setting of this series of murder mysteries, Louise Penny delivers wonderful language; weaves philosophical truths; and entices the reader to fall in love with her characters and prose. Ms. Penney is a superb crime novelist.

  • Such a great writer

I love how Louise can take you to places you might otherwise never have gone and hold you enthralled there with just her great writing. She doesn’t belabour the descriptions and yet you still get a wonderful sense of where you are and the atmosphere. Great story. Great characters.
