• 英文でも、読みやすい小説でした

  原文で読んだほうが、よりリアルにボストンの情景が伝わる気がしました。

• ミステリーか寓話か？

  何と救われない話だろうか。 結局、子供時代の３人の立場がそのまま残った結末を迎えてしまう。 アメリカ社会というのはチャンスすら平等に与えられていない社会なのだろうか。 作者はそれを糾弾したいのか。そうじゃないよね。 平等なんて言いながら、成功するのはごく僅かな者だけなんだよ。 成功者のペドロ・マルチネスの投球はそのことの象徴に見える。 多くの者は底辺をのたうち回って、浮上することはない。決して。 それをわきまえないヤツはデイヴのようになる。 ある種のブラックユーモアすら感じさせるシニシズム。そうだろう？ ケイティが殺された夜にデイヴがあんな事に遭遇するなんて。 ミステリーじゃないよ。これは。現代の寓話だ。 そして、あまりに悲しい。 英語は比較的平易と思うが、無駄にbig wordsが多い気もする。

  I love mystery thrillers and just wanted to let the mystery fans out there that this is a great novel and a must for you to read. It keeps you in suspense and I bet you won't want to put it down!

  あのクリント・イーストウッドが感激して版権を獲得して映画化したと聞いて、興味津々でした。展開は、流行りのジェットコースター型のサスペンスではなく、人の心のミステリーがぐいぐい引っ張る感じです。歯車の一つがどこかで外れていれば、あるいは、もっと早く真犯人にたどり着いていれば、・・。 淡々とした語り口で物語は当たり前のように進んでいきますが、とってもミステリーです。

• 哀しみと痛み、暗い思い出の流れる川

  一人は子供の頃の心の傷を抱え、一人は現在の生活に至るまでに暗い過去を持ち、そしてもう一人は現在の生活に穴が空いている。3人は子供の頃の遊び仲間だったが、中年にさしかかろうという時期に新たに起きた事件によって再びお互いの人生に影響を与えていく。 カテゴリーとしてはミステリー・サスペンスに入るのでしょうが、謎解きとスピード感を追求するようなものではなく、トマス・クックを思わせるような情緒的な描写が印象的な作品で、また読み終わった後しばし感慨にふけることができます。その分、ストーリーの割にはページ数が多く、中盤展開のないままちょっとだれてしまうのが残念。 でも、人生の哀しみとか、それを乗り越えていくことについて考えたい人にはお勧めです。

  This is the first book I've read by this author and I was blown away by how good it is. Fantastically evocative descriptions of the Boston neighbourhood it's set in, and a real page turner.

  Me ha encantado. Es de lo mejor que he leído en el último año. El interés aparece desde el principio y se mantiene a lo largo de la obra, consiguiendo una lectura adictiva. Así se escribe una novela policíaca.

• Dreams, Voices-in-their-heads, Aliens

  This isn't just a crime caper, this isn't just a murder mystery. One shouldn't expect high paced thrill, severe police action and brutal criminal activity. There's some of that in there. But the story is more about the people, their lives - then and now, their aspirations, their dreams, their hidden devils and their interconnected lives. It portrays how two crimes, one of the past and one of the present, affect the lives of three friends and their families - all with the ongoing gentrification of their blue collar neighbourhood as the background. It is a canvas of emotions and expressions.

• LOTS OF TWISTS & TURNS

  I'm not even half way through but I did see the movie which gave me some guidelines to follow in the book as it has many twists and turns and there may be even more in this novel. Excellent novel so far!
