- In 1992 he won the Bunkamura Dumago Literary Prize for 'Art Is Merciless: A Critical Biography of Masao Tsuruoka' (selection committee included Ryūmei Yoshimoto).
- In 2000 he was awarded a Doctor of Literature (PhD) by Taisho University.
- Died in 2004 of acute interstitial pneumonia at age 70.
