Legacy

Regarded as a "new intellectual" tanka poet who combined social perspective and lyricism. He influenced the tanka world, served as a selector for Asahi Kadan and the Imperial New Year's Poetry Reading, and won several literary prizes.

Trivia

  • His younger brother is painter and Person of Cultural Merit Shimada Shōzō.
  • He witnessed the Hiroshima atomic bombing while attending the Naval Academy.
  • He died at home and was discovered three days later.
