Two representative books of Kubota Jun's scholarship on medieval waka. Fujiwara no Shunzei: A Pioneer of Medieval Waka follows the life and poetics of the compiler of the Senzai Wakashu, while Listening to the Words of Waka is an essay collection that reads waka language through individual examples.

The Shunzei study follows the Mikohidari family's lineage, poetry gatherings, anthology compilation, and the systematization of poetics by period. The companion book uses the origins and usage of poetic words to open classical waka to new readers.
