A critical study tracing the history of Nyonin Tanka, a journal founded by women in postwar Japan and published for forty-eight years. It follows how women poets, including Gotō Miyoko and Kuzuhara Taeko, created a space for writing and mutual development beyond the boundaries of individual poetry circles.

Through the history of a journal sustained by women poets, the book reconsiders a postwar space for free expression in tanka.
