This debut novel depicts a marriage proposal brought to a family in southern Osaka through the eyes of young Nanako. In the language of Kawachi and the atmosphere of the old family system, the motives and prejudices of her mother, grandparents, father, aunt, and relatives surface through everyday speech and gestures.

From the family commotion seen by a child's eyes emerge the customs and prejudice rooted in the land.
