A Kyoto Nishijin textile merchant, Yoshizo Hishimura, creates bold new fabrics and eventually attempts to restore the brocade of Horyu-ji. The novel follows a man possessed by brocade, weaving his artistic obsession together with the love and sorrow of the women around him.
