子供向けといって侮れない本
高校の生物教員としてバッタの「相変異」の話をするが，教科書通りに「孤独相は集団で飼育すると群生相に変わる」と教える。しかし，本書によれば「まず集団で飼育すると変化が現れ転移相となり，世代を重ねると群生相へと変化する」とのことである。おそらく教科書を執筆する人も知らない内容であろう。 友人が「庭で真っ黒いトノサマバッタの幼虫を見つけた」と電話してきたときに「群生相だろうね」と答えたが，脱皮したら普通の茶色い個体に戻ったとのことである。これもおそらく転移相の中での出来事であろう。もっと詳しく調べれば，転移相での可逆的な変化などが面白い研究テーマになりそうである。
