欲望の対象はあいまい
表題作等6編を収録した短編集で、1986年の野間文芸新人賞を受賞している。 1982年に発表された表題作はまだ控えめだが、その後の作品では妄執的な欲情が描かれている。 『くずれる音』のコンサートにおける2曲目の弦楽四重奏曲は、作者はあえて固有名詞を出していないが、引用されている作曲家の手紙等からすれば、知っている人には明らかで、ヤナーチェクの『クロイツェル・ソナタ』と命名された曲である。この曲名は、ベートーヴェンの同名の有名なヴァイオリン・ソナタを利用したトルストイの小説からインスピレーションを得て作曲されたことによる。個人的には、この曲には作中で語られるほど退廃的官能性は感じないのだが。 大学生を主役とした最後の『ガラスの破片』を除けば、欲情の対象がその男である必要をほとんど感じられない、「愛」など無縁の欲望をむき出しにしたような作品群である。
