埋もれた名作
のち「寂寥郊野」で芥川賞をとり、その後沈黙してしまった作家の、平林たい子賞受賞作である。表題作は、アメリカ・ルイジアナに生きる日本人を描いた短章の連なりだがまことにすばらしい。1985年6月「ジパング」群像,1988年3月「ルイジアナ杭打ち」群像の二編を収める。「ジパング」はやや幻想的で、昭和初年か、弟のタケルと犬のセバスチャンを探しに出た日本娘ハナコとフジコの物語。 「移民の歌」の冒頭。 「山間の鉄道の小さな駅で、たった一人の若い駅員は、日本娘ハナコとの性交を希望した。若い駅員は、どちらかというと、日本娘フジコではなく、日本娘ハナコとの性交を望んだのである。彼が券売所の裏側の畳部屋を指さした時、日本娘は、村長の最初の言葉を思い出した。私共は未だかつてすけべえをしたことはないのです、姉妹はそうはっきりと説明し、 「しかし、すけべえをすることにやぶさかでは」 ないことをも告白したのだった」
