芥川賞候補ということは、これは創作なのか？ それならうなずける。だって普通なら最愛の我が子を失くした体験をこういう風には書けないもの。これまで読んだ多くの手記とあまりに違う。「普通」なら、なぜマヤは交通事故で死ななくてはならなかったのかで気も狂わんばかりになる。二日前に猫が轢かれ、二人もの交通事故死者を出している道路で娘が同じ目にあった。自分を責め、そういう道路を放置した行政を告発し、運命を呪い。それを、あたかも生まれた時から夭折が定められていたような選ばれしマヤの生き方を、詩を紡ぐようにうたい続ける。これを「文学的」と評するのはいかにも芥川賞らしい。……と思っていたら、巻末にマヤちゃんの写真が載っていて衝撃を受けた。これは実話なのか？ そうだとすれば悲しすぎる。これまで私が抱いてきたこの作品に対する違和感も、この事実の前にはうなだれるしかない。今はただマヤちゃんのご冥福をお祈りするのみ。 それにしても、芥川賞は「文学的」な私小説が対象だと思っていたが、実話もその範疇なのか？ ちなみに。過去に泉鏡花賞を受賞した『五月の晴れた日に』は、やはりお子様を亡くされたお母さまの手記だが、こちらは母の心情が切々と伝わってきた。
