東大教授の処女作
米文学者の作者によるすばる文学賞受賞作。東京駅近くで知り合った黒人青年ボブと、タイから来ている16歳の少女ソムシーは、ソムシーの姉が鎌倉で虹を見たというので、一緒に鎌倉へ行く。ソムシーも姉も、売春をして生計を立てているのだった。周囲の視線にいら立ったボブは、鎌倉の大仏を見たあと、いちゃついている日本人カップルに暴力を働いてしまう。フォークナー研究者による、外国人を主人公とした先駆的な作品である。
