関西弁による日米文化評
米谷ふみ子は作家になる前に画家だった人だそうで、1960年に渡米して、アメリカ人と結婚というのは、本書に収められた2編の中編の主役どちらとも共通する経歴である。 女流文学賞を受賞した表題作は一人称形式の、ですます調関西弁で語られた、ユーモアあふれる作品。ファミリー・ビジネスとは「うるさい親類づき合い」のことだそうだ。久しぶりに一時帰国した語り手が法事に出たりして、日本とアメリカとの文化の違いについて何かと注釈するが、それが関西弁であるところに味がある。母親おはるばあさんのキャラが楽しい。 アメリカが舞台の『千一本の火柱』は三人称形式で、主人公の主観などに関西弁が部分的に使われている。1992年に起こったロドニー・キング事件をきっかけとしたロスアンジェルス暴動事件を背景にしていて、人種差別問題が取り上げられているが、主人公と夫とのやり取りは。やはりコミカルだ。
