古きよき日本人の心に触れられる・・・
「やまあいの煙」は映画「おくりびと」に通じるテーマについて書かれた短編です。 火葬場で死者を荼毘にふす仕事についている主人公が、恋人に自分の仕事の内容を言えず葛藤する様がよく描かれています。 作者の鋭い観察眼ときめ細かな筆致で、昭和の古きよき時代にタイムスリップしたようでした。秀逸です！

精神の暗転の兆し
表題作【やまあいの煙】は火葬場で働く小柄な男が、自身の仕事に負い目を持たず、人を炎で浄化して綺麗な骨に焼き上げると言う一種の哲学の様なプライドを持って死者と遺族に接している。遺族が袖の下を押し付けてくるのを、それで気が済むのならと仕方なく受け取るような易しくとても純粋な男だった。 だが、以前から自身が恐れていたように、女と関係を持つことで純粋だった精神に暗転の兆しが現れると言う話。 あまりにも脆い純粋な心を描いているようで、最後は男に落胆に似た悲しみを覚えました。 表題作以外にも戦前から戦中を描いた【見えすぎる目】。戦中を描いた【白いブラウス】。戦後を描いた【組み敷いた影】を所収。この三作はどれも女性の視点で描かれている。戦前から戦後にかけてを知るにはなかなかの作品。 なお表題作は 【第81回(1979年上半期)芥川龍之介賞】受賞作
