Karedaki is Shuzo Kado's novel about youthful frustration and the weight of family. Yoshinobu Hayashi is born in a mountain village in Osaka Prefecture; his father has failed at farming and lives in at a poultry farm, while his mother has disappeared with a younger man. Disliking life on that land, Yoshinobu moves to Tokyo to become an actor and lives with Motoko Hirahira, whom he meets at an acting school, but his dream gradually recedes. When he brings his father into their household, the family and everyday burdens he tried to escape return before him.
