珊瑚礁に囲まれた小さな島におじいさんと暮らす少年タルタ。この島の人たちは毎年10月のはじめになると大群で島に飛んでくるサシバ（渡りのタカ）を心待ちにしていて、タカが渡ってくるとみなタカが舞い降りてくる海岸にかけつけ、木の上でタカを素手でつかまえるのです。この年、初めてタカを捕りに行ったタルタの胸に一羽のタカがとびこんできました。タルタと、ピルバと名付けられたこのタカは、ともに野山を駆け、ピルバはネズミやバッタを捕らえます。やがて少年とタカは互いに強い絆で結ばれていきますが、渡りのタカはさらに南を目指して飛びたいのです。それを知ったタルタはピルバに別れを告げます。しかし明け方の空に舞い上がったタカの群は一羽の大きな鳥となって舞い戻り、タルタと共に南へと飛び去りました。 沖縄の宮古島を舞台にした壮大で神話的なな物語を、美しく迫力のある絵でおたのしみください。 読んであげるなら：5・6才から 自分で読むなら：小学低学年から
