Yoshiakira Shinjo was a pioneering scholar of André Gide in Japan and a prolific translator of French literature. Through his translations and studies he significantly influenced the reception of French literature in Japan. He taught at Waseda University, influenced many researchers and writers, and received the Japan Art Academy Prize / Imperial Award in 1990, becoming a member of the Academy the same year.
