1950年アメリカに生まれる。少年時代を台湾、香港で過す。プリンストン大学卒。プリンストン大学、スタンフォード大学の日本文学教授を務めた。『万葉集』の英訳により、全米図書賞を受賞。ほかに『柿本人麻呂』（英文）がある。1967年以降、日米を往還。現在、東京在住。法政大学教授。 著書に『星条旗の聞こえない部屋』（野間文芸新人賞受賞）、『日本語の勝利』『アイデンティティーズ』（ともに講談社刊）がある。『天安門』は1996年芥川賞候補となる。
