Mockingbird no Iru Machi is Reiko Mori's short story about the inner lives of Japanese women living in the United States. Keiko, who lives with her veteran husband in a rural town in the American Midwest, becomes increasingly seized by homesickness as she grows older. Sue, who clings to an unhappy affair with a younger man, and June, whose educational obsession leads to the death of her child, also appear, bringing into view the love, loneliness, and betrayal inside lives built abroad.

期待通り
森禮子が芥川賞を受賞した心に残る作品です。深く感動しました。商品はとてもきれいなままで満足です。

ちょい役のモッキングバード
収録された4編中最も長いのが表題作で、タイトルが気に入って読んでみたのだったが、そのモッキングバード（作中では物真似鳥と訳されているが、和名はマネシツグミ）は、2/3を過ぎたあたりでちょっと登場するだけで、象徴的にもほとんど意味を持たない。作者の国際結婚した姉が住んでいたアメリカの町に滞在した経験がもとになっているのだそうで、軍人と結婚した日本人妻の思いが語られる。日本での捕虜生活経験を持つ友人の微妙な感情やラストのインディアンたちの「ゴーストダンス」も印象深く、なかなかおもしろかった。 次の『離島狂騒曲』の離島での新興宗教騒ぎはまあ変な話と言ったところ。『遊園地暮景』は全体的な雰囲気がいい作品。最後の『風を捉える』には、『離島狂騒曲』からも感じられた作者の宗教に対する考え方がより明確に示されているが、ラストがこれでは締めくくりになっていないだろうと思える。

何もしないことが罪
【芥川賞】mocking bird, スズメ目マネシツグミ科34種の16種。ツグミに似ている。mockは真似。有名な映画「To Kill a Mockingbird」（アラバマ物語）の資料によれば、mockingbirdは罪のない弱い人間を指す。インディアンのことであり、戦争花嫁の日本人妻のことであり、種のないスウの夫のことなのだろうか。do nothingが罪の無いことであるようで、何もしないことが罪なのかもしれない。
